Programme assumptions

Main Stream of the Conference
The conference Future Materials 2011 falls within the mainstream of discussion on the role of advanced materials in facing Grand Societal Challenges of Our Time, as formulated in the Lund Declaration. The main objective of FUMAT’2011 is to suggest strategies and research directions that could contribute to the solutions of these challenges in line with the  Europe 2020 and the Innovation Union policies.

It is proposed to structure the Conference programme into parallel “vertical” tracks destined for selected issues, and plenary sessions aiming for treatment of significant horizontal cross-cutting aspects of R&D in materials science and engineering.

The planned topics of plenary sessions are:

PLENARY 1: Advanced Materials and Grand Challenges
Within this session two half-hour keynote lectures are proposed, one from academia and one from industry. The speakers will be expected to present their view on the role of materials in further development of the EU and the World in the context of needs defined by the Lund Grand Challenges. It is hoped that the role of advanced materials as key enabling technology will be underlined.

PLENARY 2: International partnership in materials research
Within this session 3-4 keynote lectures will be scheduled. Invited speakers from partnership regions  - Eastern Europe, Far East (Japan, China or India), US, Latin America, will be invited to present selected directions of break-through research on advanced materials in their countries, as well as the perspectives of transnational collaboration in these fields.

PLENARY 3: Synergy of resources in materials development
The session will be  focused on the means of developing future materials. The pros and cons of existing mechanisms and instruments (Joint Programming, Public-Private Partnership, parallel use of national and European resources, etc.) will be analyzed, and best solutions will be suggested. The session will be organized in the form of plenary  discussion to be led by a moderator. Several key panelist representing stakeholders of research in materials (research, industry, public funds, banking sector, venture capital, …) will be invited in order to confront different points of view and different experiences. Important part of this session will be Questions & Answers, and comments from the public.

The proposed vertical tracks are as follows:

TRACK 1: Materials for Future Energy
Needs of Energy application, with focus on new “green” energy technologies, such as renewable sources (solar, biofuels, geothermal, hydrogen), as well as traditional resources (coal, petroleum) in order to make them “greener”.

TRACK 2: Materials for Transport and Environment
New functional materials to make the transport more effective and greener;

TRACK 3: Materials in Health, Ageing Society and Bio-applications
Materials for medical applications (biocompatible, biodegradable) with new functions.
Applications in food industry.

TRACK 4: Materials for Sustainable Development
Materials technologies with significantly limited environmental footprint including

  • material research for substitution of critical elements in core products (e.g. rare earths in magnets, Co in hard metals)
  • new production technologies with less use of critical materials (e.g. replacement of Au in chip bond) (link to TP Manufuture)
  • increase material life cycle by protection against wear and corrosion
  • advanced recycling technologies and recycle friendly design including new technologies for retrieval of rare materials from industrial waste.

TRACK 5: Societal dimension of advanced materials, Education, Trainings, Increase of awareness
Societal impact of new materials (employee market, style of life, protection of cultural heritage), educational needs in the context of materials development (e.g. interdisciplinary education, converging technologies), activities for dissemination of knowledge of the role of new materials and for societal acceptance of new technologies (e.g. nanomaterials).

Accompanying Actions
The event will gather a significant number of academia, industry and policy makers interested in European Research on materials. It will offer an opportunity for participants to present their views on future of the materials, as well as their developments and propositions of short- and mid-term collaboration

Thematic Workshops
The Conference will also create the floor for presentation and discussion of sectorial views on development of materials, and related needs and propositions. The floor will be given to arrange up to three thematic workshops. The European Technology Platforms, International organizations, and European Initiatives dealing with materials will be invited to organize these workshops. The workshop proposals matching in the best way goals of the Conference will be selected by the International Advisory Committee.

Exhibition
An opportunity to exhibit own achievements will be offered as a separate, independent action. Up to 30 semi-stands, or posters can be arranged. Industry representatives and coordinators of successful FP projects will be invited to present their  achievements.

Brokerage event
The Conference will take place soon after the publishing of the 6th FP7 NMP Calls (2012). In order to promote the participation in materials topics of these calls, a brokerage event will be organized as an accompanying event. The aim of the brokerage will be presentation of project ideas related to open topics, as well as networking and individual meetings leading to increase of quality of the project consortia.
